***...the U.S.A. is a Christian nation because those who claim otherwise can never seem to tell the difference between the Constitution and the document that actually founded this country: the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration clearly spells out the fact that the rights and freedoms we enjoy are granted to us by a higher power. Though not mentioned by name, the mere fact that He is called Creator makes this a clear reference to the "God of the Bible," or the God worshiped by Christians and Jews, thus the references to "Judeo-Christian" ethics/values/laws, etc. This Declaration was also written nearly 11 years before our Constitution was ratified, meaning that the U.S.A. *could* have had Christianity as its "official religion" had the Framers not put the various exclusionary clauses in the Constitution to prevent that from happening.

 The Framers knew what they were doing, though, and took care of this in Article VI and in the First Amendment. This allowed people who adhered to other religions to participate in government, become citizens, and worship as they pleased. This fact didn't, however, make the U.S.A. any less a Christian nation after the Constitution was ratified than before. The principles on which all the articles and amendments (Bill of Rights) were written were "Judeo-Christian". Statutes of law in the individual states had to be written within the bounds of that Constitution, and everyone has to follow those laws regardless of whether they are Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish, or whatever. The laws aren't specifically religious, and can't be, because of the First Amendment, but they have to be followed by all. The fact that the laws are based on the Constitution and the Constitution is based on Judeo-Christian principles means that if we are truly a country of laws, then we are truly a Christian nation. ~ gtorborg77***
